YES! It’s true! You aren’t dreaming! I promise!
Dark chocolate contains two compounds that actually strengthen teeth and help fight cavities and gum disease BETTER than fluoride.
These compounds come from the cacao bean husk itself. More and more studies are coming out suggesting dark chocolate is better for our teeth than our fluoride toothpastes.
If you live in an area where water is boosted with fluoride and use a fluoride toothpaste, you may be getting too much fluoride, a condition called “fluorosis.” Children who have a habit of swallowing fluoride toothpaste are particularly susceptible to this. With growing concerns over fluoride use, dark chocolate may be the answer to our teeth problems!
The kicker: it has to be DARK chocolate of at least 70% cacao content. Lowest sugar versions are best, so you can forget about milk and white chocolate, as well as mixes with low dark content.
If you haven’t tried dark chocolate, this is another great reason to. It is an acquired taste for many people, especially if you are used to sugary milk chocolates. Once you start eating the good stuff, you may never go back!
